Gizmo’s Story

After having lost my childhood dog and best friend of 14 years, I was very emotionally fragile. For two years following Miki’s passing, I didn’t consider or think about getting another dog. I knew that I would eventually have another furry companion, but I thought that time was long into the future. It was when I saw a post on Facebook about a found dog that it even became something on my radar. I messaged to ask if the found dog had been reunited with his family and had all intentions in adopting him if he was not. Thankfully, he was. From that moment forward, I started browsing Petfinder every now and then but I wasn’t ready to commit. That is, until I saw Gizmo’s profile.

Gizmo, a 3-4 year old Jack Russel and Chihuahua mix, was described as being friendly, affectionate, loyal, athletic, quiet, and smart in addition to being a “velcro-dog,” a dog who wants to be with people all of the time and will follow everyone around. He had a cherry eye at the time but was having it surgically removed before he would be available for adoption.

Gizmo was surrendered by his owner, along with two other dogs, and left at a high-kill animal pound in Indiana. Jean, a Cry for Help Animal Rescue organizer, took him in as a foster, cared for him, and listed him for adoption.

Now, he’s got me wrapped around his paw.

He’s an incredibly gracious, gentle, loving little guy. Cuddles are his absolute favorite thing, followed by Greenie dental bones and trips to Petco for his jerky treat, which he carries out of the store himself. My partner and I are so lucky to have him. Together, we’re a small happy family of three. Gizmo brightens each of our days and shows us daily that we must extend kindness to not only members of our own species, but also to all sentient beings. All animals deserve the kind of love and consideration we show our pets.
